Show Water turns red During the past week, Paragonah residents have watched their water turn from clear to cloudy and, now, to red. Those taking baths or showers feel that they have come out dirtier than they went in. The red water in Paragonah's culinary system seems to be a recurring incident which usually happens in the spring instead of the fall, as it has this year. LeGrande Robb, Paragonah board, member, said that he suspected at first that the red water was coming out ' of the Sinks, as it had done in past years. But now he is unsure of where the water is coming from. Above the dugway of Paragonah in the Co-op valley, northeast of the Yankee, is the Sinks resevoir. In frontier days, the water in this resevoir would sink into the ground, thus leading to the name of the Sinks. Since then a dam has been built to hold the water back from the Sinks. In the past Alma and Alan Adams, owners of the dam, would turn out the water, causing Paragonah to have red water until it was shut off. Robb had talked to the Adams when the water first started turning red this week. Robb said that the Adams claimed that they haven't turned any water out lately, but they had turned out some a while ago so that their storage resevoir would not overflow and break their dam. There are a number of possibilities, but we're not sure what is causing the red water. In the meantime, Mayor Scott Barton has sent samples of the water to the State Bureau of Public Water Supplies, and the verdit is that the water is drinkable, although officials can't filter the color out of the water. |
