Show Volleyball T-Birds hit road An increasingly impressive im-pressive won-lost record will be on the line this week when Southern Utah State College's volleyball team takes to the road for four matches. mat-ches. The Thunderbird women have clicked off seven consecutive victories vic-tories after losing their first outing to accumulate a 7-1 record. Making the record even more impressive im-pressive is the caliber of competition the 'Birds have whipped along the way. "This isn't the fastest start we've had-one season we opened with 12 straight wins--but it is an excellent start," Joy Peterson, SUSC coach, says. "We've earned that record against some pretty good competition. The team has come on very quick; I'm pleased." Road competition this week includes Colorado Women's College and Colorado College Friday at Colorado Springs i (home courts of Colorado College), and two matches mat-ches at two sites Saturday. Satur-day. First Saturday action will be at 11 a.m. against University of Northern Colorado at Greeley. Then, at 5 p.m. in Denver, the Thun-derbirds Thun-derbirds will go against Metropolitan State. Before they get to perform per-form at home again, the 'Birds will challenge Dixie College in St. George Tuesday. "Northern Colorado was the regional champion last year, and they should be strong again this year," Peterson forecasts. "We've also seen both Metro and Colorado Women's College play. CWC, especially, should be a strong challenge for us. "We are looking forward for-ward to some stiff competition, competition that is probably better than what we've faced so far this season," Peterson says. SUSC ran it's record up last week with victories over Ricks College (15-5,13-15,15-3) and Adams State College (15-6,15-4,10-15,15-17,15-4). The Adams State game was a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match and gives the T-Birds a 4-0 conference record. None of this week's games is a conference affair. "Chris Whetton did an excellent job for us over the weekend. She hit well and just played well all over the court," Peterson says. "We played better against Ricks; some of the girls acted tired against Adams State." SUSC played its bench through both the third and fourth games Peterson has pretty much settled on a regular starting six, something that she has never done before' at SUSC. "They complement each other well and they play so well together," she explains. The six include Natalie Smith, Lori Mott, Grover, McCurdy, Michelle Cottle, and Whetton. |
