Show SHORT CREEK RESIDENTS ON TRIAL 11V ARIZONA STATU EOR PRACTICE OK POLVGA M V The state of Arizona was frustrated frus-trated a second time on September 28 in its attempt to prosecute In the justice court at Short Creek, Arizona, three residents of that community on charges of "open and notorious cohabitation." The defendants on the proceedings proceed-ings are Price Johnson, Calling Silencer and Sylvia Allre.d. They were brought into court Home time ago but charges were dismissed dismis-sed by Justice of the Peace J. M. Launtzen at that time. At the opening of the Hecond trial a certiliciite which County Attorney E. Elmo Bollinger said would prove an illegitimate birth in the community and thus have an important hearing on the case was introduced by the prosecutor, but Justice of the I'eace Laurit-zen Laurit-zen refused to admit the certificate certifi-cate for identification. Victor J. Hayek, attorney for the defense, then agrees! with Bollinger that the case should bo transferred to a hither court. The legal proceedings are an attempt at-tempt by the state, of Arizona to stamp out alleged polygamy among the "s'anhedrin fill" a group which came to fihort Creek some time ago with the Intontlon of e-ta bli - h ing a colony there. L. D. S. church leaders investigated investi-gated the colony and its teachings recently and have since that, time excommunicated seventeen Of the group from the church. |
