Bumps sveoges raSSy fto edcje EV3eol3 "(For srovura Neola had a 5-3 lead and two outs in the last inning of the championship game of the UBIC Men's Softball Tournament in Roosevelt, Saturday, but Bumps struck for three runs, which netted them a 6-5 victory and first place honors. The Neola softballers gained a 5-3 lead in the first extra inning when "Mutt" Dye smashed the ball over right fielder, Lanny Ross head for a homer and Jeff Horrocks crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Dye. Horrocks hit a double, and was moved to third base on a single by Bill Labrum. Chances of gaining the first place crown in the second game seemed to be bleak for Bumps going into the bottom of the eighth inning. Larry Nielsen reached first base on a walk, and Tom Sprouse flied out to Bill Labrum, the second baseman, who was playing close to first base. Nielsen advanced to second base. Bill Trowbridge flied out for the second oui, and Neola was one out away from a first place victory. However, John Gilbert singled to keep Bumps' chances alive and Nielsen moved to third base. Dave Labrum hit the ball and Neola tried to nail Gilbert at second base for the final out, but they failed. Nielsen scored on the play and Labrum reached first base on a fielder's choice. The run cut Neola's lead to 5-4. If Neola could retire Lanny Ross the first place crown would be theirs, but Ross, who had the ball hit by "Mutt" Dye go over his head for a home run, decided that he wanted to trade his goat title for a hero crown as he blasted the ball into the outfield for a double, which drove in Gilbert with the game tying run. Labrum advanced to third base, and a few minutes later Ken Trowbridge connected on a single, which drove in Dave Labrum with the winning run. The final score was: Bumps. 6 and Neola. 5. Neola finished in second, and the Wild Bunch netted third place. Neola jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second and championship deciding contest. Kent Olsen. Shane Gardner and Kim Rastian blasted singled and crossed home plate in the second inning in-ning Bumps cut Neola's lead to 3-2 with two counters in the fourth inning. Bill Trowbridge singled, and John Gilbert got on base due to an error. Both runners scored for Bumps. Larry Nielsen singled and tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the' sixth inning. Neola defeated Bumps, 18 to 12. in the first game to force the Roosevelt team into a second contest. The Neola soft-ball soft-ball slueeers leaned out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but Bumps cut Neola's lead to 7 to fi. with a run scoring explosion in the fourth inning. The Neola team massacred Bumps in the sixth inning due to a 11-run attack. Bumps scored five runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to make the final-first final-first game score: Neola. 18 and Bumps, 12. "Mutt" Dye scored three times in the game for Neola. Kyle Dye, Kent Bastian, Kent Olsen, Kim Bastian, Gary Dye, Neola and John Gilbert, Bill Trowbridge, Dave Labrum, Lanny Ross and Ken Trowbridge, Bumps, scored twice in the game. When asked to comment on the victory. Bumps' Larry Nielsen and John Hullinger, said, "You have to credit Lanny Ross for his double. It was a team effort. We were down by two runs with two outs and we won." Burke Eldredge of Bumps stated, "We still felt up. Everyone was still up with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning because of the feeling of togetherness and team spirit. It was a total united effort and total team committment." Neola advanced into the championship cham-pionship game when they edged the Wild Bunch from Roosevelt, 11 to 10. Wild Bunch tied the game at 10-10, and had two outs in the top half of the final inning. However, the second baseman dropped a shot that could have resulted in the third out and Neola scored the winning run. Bumps defeated the Tribe I team, and the Longhorns thumped Don's TV in the first round. Iorg downed RaeDee's Drifters, and Clover Club thumped the Vocational Center. Young's Paint of Vernal downed the Skins, and Neola melted Ice Cream for a victory. The Wild Bunch defeated Dalbo. and Jim Grant downed Standard Motel. Bumps defeated the Longhorns, and Clover Club downed Iorg. Neola defeated Young's Paint, and the Wild Bunch downed Jim Grant. Bumps toppled Clover Club, and Neola thumped the Wild Bunch. Bumps advanced ad-vanced into the championship game when they defeated Neola. Young's Paint of Vernal toppled Dalbo, 25 to 6, in the consolation division and then was nipped by Jim Grant, 7 to 6. The Wild Bunch of Roosevelt defeated the Don's TV and . Clover Club, and lost out to Neola for the shot at Bumps for the title. |
