Show The game called softball is a fun sport to watch because many unusual, strange and comical items can occur in the bat swinging and ball smashing activity. Coed softball is a sport, which appears ap-pears to becoming more and more popular in the LDS sports program. However, some of the players haven't been together as a team very often. Creg Wilkins, third baseman, nabbed a hot smash and shortstop, Darwin Oaks, ran toward the third base bag and said, "Give me the ball." Wilkins flipped the ball to Oaks, but after nabbing the ball in his glove Oaks tripped over the base and dropped the white object. The runner was safe. When these players compete in the sport of softball they are all out to win. Men and women are playing against each other, but the sport is still a contact activity. First basewoman, Lynne Wilkins of Naples 2nd, found out that softball is a contact sport when she touched first base for an out and then was run over by Vernal 3rd's Tim Hadlock. Lynne Wilkins still had the ball in her glove after she picked herself up off the ground. A runner was charging toward home plate and Dora Cook was told to get the player out at home. She didn't have time to tag the runner so she hit the player with the softball. The umpire called the runner safe, and Dora Cook said, "Why is the player safe I hit him with the ball." The ball is never gained for an out until the item is safely in the glove. Dave Good popped a lazy fly ball that didn't go out of the infield for what appeared to be the final out. Vernal 6th's Good started running toward first base and turned toward the dugout because he figured the ball would be caught for the third out. Gordon Daley, third baseman and Brad Schaefermeyer, pitcher, converged con-verged on the ball. In their eagerness to catch the ball and end the game both players crashed into each other and the ball dropped to the ground. Good wasn't watching what was going on and by the time he figured out what his coach was trying to tell him Vernal 8th used him for the third out as they fired the ball to first base to end the game. Vernal 8th defeated Maeser 3rd in two games for first place in the LDS Junior Regional Softball Tournament. . ' Softball and baseball players (have dropped flies, booted easy grounders, dj-opped the third strike and have committed many other mistakes they would like to forget. Sometimes the players live with the mistake for years and years, and it's not very often that a player can redeem himself for the error in the same game. Mike Reynolds of Maeser 3rd hit an easy foul fly to Gordon Daley, the third baseman. The ball entered the softball catching machine and then slipped out of the mitt for an error. Reynolds was still alive at the plate. However, Reynolds didn't take advantage of the situation as he fired a shot back to Gordon Daley for an out: "If at first you don't succeed try, try again" was the title of the battle between the batter, Mike Reynolds and the third baseman, Gordon Daley. Anotner example ot a player changing from a goat to the hero in the game is Lanny Ross of Bumps in the UBIC Men's Softball Tournament in Roosevelt, Saturday. "Mutt" Dye of Neola hit the ball over. Ross' head and nabbed a home run for what appeared to be the winning run. Ross didn't let the costly mistake of playing a shallow right field affect his batting in the bottom of the eighth inning as he stroked a double, which drove in the game tying run. Bumps won the championship when Ken Trowbridge singled in Dave Labrum for the winning run, with two outs. A fan was watching the LDS Senior Regional championship game between Davis 2nd and Vernal 6th, and when Davis 2nd's Marty Mangum came up to bat, he said, "I sure like to watch him." The fan must know something about the Davis softball leaguer as the batter delivered the ball over the fence for a round tripper. Many fine plays were turned in by softballers in the Maeser 3rd-Vernal 8th junior encounter. Vernal Rth's Art Daley, catcher, nabbed a number of pop fouls, and foul tips for outs. The best play that Daley committed was one where he dove for the ball, crashed in the earth, created a dust storm and held onto the softball for an out. Scott Kavanaugh of Maeser 3rd started the game off by diving through the air to rob Rod Anderson of a hit. Vernal 8th didn't let the first out bug them as they ripped the Maeser 3rd pitcher for 11 runs and a 11-0 lead in the first inning of the first game against Maeser 3rd in the junior title game. One of the most unusual hits in the game between Maeser 3rd and Vernal 8th wasn't really a hit according to the rules of softball, but it was a strange one. Dave Emery smashed the softball and as it was going foul it hit a utility pole. Thegameof softball can make a hero of some players and a goat out of some athletes, and sometimes a player can overcome a costly error with a single, double, triple or homer in the fun filled game called softball. |
