City repairs Maeser water storage tank The Vernal City Council moved to take immediate action Wednesday, August 1 to repair the Maeser water tank which has developed a leak and is eroding on the lid. "It's a problem," said Lawrence Kay. Uintah Engineering. "Let it go and you'll lose a tank," he warned the city. ' The leak from the tank is in the valve of a four-inch pipe coming from the tank and connecting to the main six-inch six-inch pipe. The leaking water could soften the shale base of the tank and cause it to fall in. The water level in the tank has been lowered to prevent further leakage. Another concern is that the lid of the tank is made from poor cement and is eroding from exposure to the elements. It also shows 80 feet of failure, Kay said. Kay recommended that the lid of the tank be coated with a material that would prevent the erosion. The tank was drained Tuesday to inspect the condition of the inside. Also the four inch pipe was plugged to prevent leakage. After looking at the tank, Shane Luck said that the problems with the tank were under control. It was estimated at the meeting that the total cost of repairing the tank would be $50 to $100 thousand. During the meeting Councilman Gene Anfinson moved that a special meeting be held with Maeser to discuss their water problems with the city. The meeting with Maeser Water Board will be Wednesday, August 8 at 8 p.m. The public is invited to attend at the Vernal City Office, 495 East Main. Other items discussed in the council meeting were the notice of bonds to be sold for the Vernal Main Street and a five person committee formed by the Ashley Valley Water District to investigate in-vestigate the problems of Naples. |
