I9fi4. t'TK (iKII) SQUAD W IN'S OPENER OF NEW SEASON h'riday dawned an exceptionally line sunny day and Uintah High School football squad opened its 1964 season with a win over Green River, Wyoming, of 19 to 6. The second game of the season is to be held at Craig, Colorado, Friday beginning at 7:30 p.m. Several of last year's lettermen are b;ick this year plus many strong players. Nine sophomores are listed in t he rank and file making up a total of 35 squad members. The game seemed- to move slowly at first, for the first quarter ended with a O-o score. But in the first five seconds of the second quarter, Kent Thomas, Ute left halfback, carried the ball for a touchdown. Then at the end of the first h;ilf Green River ran 75 yards for a t.iuchdown tying the score at 6-6. After two plays in the second half, halfback Pat Punches scored another touchdown for the mighty Utes, making the score, with no extra point, 12-6. With 1 : 08 left in the last half Gary Tassainer i p;issed the ball to Chick Beynon who ran for another six points, which after succeeding in taking the extra point, ended the game. Uintah 19. UINTAH I TESC IIALK I P SECOND W IN September 11 the Uintah Ute scored Iho second win of the football season when they defeated Moffat County High School of Craig, Colorado, with a final score of 27-7. The extra i point was awarded, but soon Craig caiu'ht up, tying the score at 7-7. base bag in the LDS Coed Softball Tourney. The number two Ute touchdown came when Pat Punches, leu naitback. broke the Bulldog line and ran 88 yards for the score. Quarterback, Gary Tassainer threw a long pass to Bill Pope who carried the pigskin to the Craig five yard line. Again Punches took over adding the third score of the nipht to the Utes side of the board. It seemed to be his game as he carried the ball to the final score of the game with 8:36 left in the final quarter. No extra point was added, making the official tally 27-7 in favor of the Uintah Utes. Union High School of Roosevelt was defeated last week by Green River, Wyoming, 27-13.' Uintah defeated the Green River club 19-6 on September 4th. Uintah garnered its third win in a row when they blanked Rangely. UTE GRID TEAM WINS 3RD GAME HERE FRIDAY Uintah High School finished the third football game and the third football victory of the season when they shutout Rangely, Colorado 13-0 Friday in a home game. Friday marks the big Homecoming game for Uintah. The East Carbon Vikings will travel to Vernal for the event. Saturday the Vikings tied Notre Dame on the Carbon College field. Numerous fumbles by both teams killed scoring possibilities. The Deseret News puts East Carbon in the number three spot in the region. Neal Dastrup snagged a Panther pass in the first scrimmage play of the Rangely game which started Uintah on the first of a series of two complete downs. Left Halfback Pat Punches again showed that he can get out and run as he broke away to shoot 60 yards before being caught on the four yard line by Rangely defenders. Time ran out before the Utes could score. Coach Ixiu Mele had this to say about his Ute team, "Our secondary did especially well. We intercepted two of the three passes they attempted." I'TE GRID TEAM DUMPS UNION 32-6 FRIDAY Coach Lou Mele's Uintah High football squad did it again Friday, beating Union at Roosevelt, 32-6. Uintah's five touchdowns were HaliiroroH hv Phiplr Rpunnn Rill Pnn vnviv j . - j and Pat Punches. An unofficial tally shows that Punches carried the pigskin 24 times. The Union score came shortly before the end of the first half. Gary Tassainer performed his usual fine job of quar-terbacking quar-terbacking and Junior right halfback, .Bill Pope put on a fine show of intercepting, in-tercepting, catching and running. The standings in Region 6 are: Northern Division, Moab, 2-0: Uintah, 2-1; East Carbon, 2-2: Union, 1-2: Southern Division, San Juan, 2-1; Green River, 1-1: 1-1: Monticello, 1-3; Notre Dame, 0-2. 1979 Sports Editor note: Union was bombed by Uintah in the 1964 season, but next year, 1965, the Cougars captured cap-tured the Class B crown in football. |
