Show New Corp. Formed In Blanding The Utah Navajo Development Develop-ment Council (UNDC), Blanding, Blan-ding, recently added an impressive subsidiary to its organization. In what UNDC Executive Director Clear Bradford Brad-ford calls a "major move," a secondary incorporation has taken place within UNDC that will establish Utah Navajo Industries. (UNI), as the enterprise arm of UNDC, a separate business entity that will bring significant economic development to the Utah Navajo. UNDC's decision to form a subsidiary was based in part on the legal policies governing what constitutes a "non-profit corporation." UNI will consist of several major business enterprises which may have jeopardized the non-profit status of the UNDC incorporation. incorporat-ion. The formation of UNI will improve the employment potential po-tential for the Utah Navajo and expand their present economic base. The enterprises that make up UNI include the Henry Hillson Company, a wholesale clothing distribution; Metra, an educational materials and training enterprise; Mini-factories, two glove and toy sewing plants; and UNI building supply, a building materials outlet. UNI will be under the guidance of a 5-member board of directors. Those named to the board are Robert Billie, chairman; Jonas Mustache, vice-chairman; Andrew Benal-ly, Benal-ly, secretary-treasurer; Rose Mark, member; and Roy Atine, member. The UNI Board is appointed by, but will remain separate ' from, the 9-member UNDC Board. Each enterprise will operate under its own salary scale and employee policies, as approved by the UNI Board. Presently there are 73 Navajo employees with UNI, and according to Mr. Bradford, Brad-ford, that number will increase significantly as operations in each enterprise gain momentum. momen-tum. ' The addition of UNI and the overall growth of UNDC can best be summed up by a portion of a letter from Mr. Bradford to the. UNDC Board of Directors: "...What just five ' years ago consisted of three staff members and an annual budget of $122,723 for all UNDC services, now lists over 180 employees and has generated gener-ated an approximate annual service capacity of close to $5 million. Under existing plans UNDC will continue to grow and provide more jobs as well as improve the economic and educational level of the Utah Navajo-" |
