Regulations pertaining to the hunting of cougar and bear in Utah for the 1977-78 period were established in the latest meeting of the State's Wildlife Board. Most regulations regula-tions remain the same as in past years; however, notable changes were instituted in the guidelines for both species. Cougar Cougar hunting will be open year-round again in the Southern South-ern Region: Beaver, Iron, Millard, Mil-lard, Piute, Sevier, Washington, Washing-ton, and parts of Garfield, Kane and Wayne counties. The Henry Mountains Area comprises the portions of Garfield, Kane and Wayne counties closed to cougar hunting. hun-ting. The remainder of the State will be open to cougar hunting from November 2, 1977 through April 15, 1978, except in the Northwestern Area: Box Elder, Cache, Davis, Dav-is, Morgan, .Rich, Salt Lake, Summit, Utah and Weber counties. Cougar may be pursued statewide with a valid 1977-78 pursuit permit, including the Northwestern Area, .but excluding ex-cluding the Henry Mountains . Area, from November 2, 1977, through April 15, 1978, -and year-round in the Southern Region as described above. Pursuit permits do not entitle pursuers to possess, capture, kill, injure or otherwise harm a cougar (or bear). Sportsmen . may possess a Utah Cougar-bear Cougar-bear pursuit permit and a regular cougar permit simultaneously. simul-taneously. Any cougar shall be legal game during the prescribed seasons except any kitten with spots or lion accompanied accompan-ied by young. The season limit in all areas open to hunting is one lion except in Beaver, Iron and Washington counties and in those parts of Kane and Garfield counties west of the following described boundaries: boundar-ies: Beginning at the Utah-Arizona state line and the Paria River, thence, northerly along the Paria River to Cannon-ville, Cannon-ville, thence, : northeasterly along Highway U-54 through Escalante and Boulder to the Garfield-Wayne County line. Season limit in the area previously described is two lions. Daily bag limit in this area is one cat. If a second cougar is taken under the provisions described describ-ed above, it must be properly tagged according to the tagging tag-ging procedures set forth in the proclamation. A second permit and tag may be purchased pur-chased at any Wildlife Resources Re-sources office. Cost for the second permit will be the same as the original permit (resident $15, nonresident - $150). . As in years past, all cougars taken must be delivered to a conservation officer or to one of the Division offices within forty-eight (48) hours after the date of kill for the purpose of obtaining physical measurements. meas-urements. Cats may be field dressed, but the hide must remain attached to the carcass. car-cass. Bear Bear hunting in Utah will be legal during 1977 from April 16, 1977, through June 15, 1977. and September 1, 1977 through October 15, I 1977. All areas of the State will be open to bear hunting except the Northwestern Area, Ar-ea, which is comprised of Box Elder, Cache, Rich, Weber, Morgan, Summit, Tooele, Davis, Da-vis, Salt Lake, Utah and Juab counties. Tooele, Salt Lake, Utah and Juab counties are newly closed counties this year. Also, elk, moose, buffalo, buffa-lo, antelope and bighorn hunting hunt-ing units are closed to bear hunting during their prescribed prescrib-ed seasons. Other changes include: allowing al-lowing nonresident hunters to take bear in Utah on a statewide basis and making it illegal to "bait" bears to any area. Bear may be pursued statewide, state-wide, including the Northwestern North-western Area, from April 16, 1977, through October 15, 1977, by those in possession of a valid 1977-78 Utah cougar-bear cougar-bear pursuit permit. Pursuit permit holders may not possess, pos-sess, capture, kill, injure or otherwise harm the animals they pursue. A possessor of a Utah cougar-bear pursuit permit per-mit may also possess a Utah bear permit. Season limit is one boar. Any bear ahall be legal gnmo during the open season except any cub or sow accompanied by young. I |
