Show Letters to the Editor . . . Dear Sam, Regarding the excellent debate de-bate taking place because of the BLM Organic Act. It seems to me that the debate has raised many valid questions ques-tions such as the following: Who really is protecting the total environment and freedom free-dom of Americans? Is it beer can strewing environmentalists environmental-ists who demand more regulations regula-tions and restrictions in order to control the people? Is it farmers, oilmen, ranchers, and miners who demand less restrictions and regulations of 1 V rirpnlp order to produce more material jroods for the country? Is it articulate over-conservationists over-conservationists who would rather walk than ride and who would halt progress by banning ban-ning the use of machinery upon our land? Is it businesses that provide goods and services ser-vices for the people, or is it immensely rich and powerful government agencies who are attempting to regulate and control us? Who really are the environmental environ-mental offenders? Is it all of the American people? Must we all be tightly controlled by the government in order to protect us against ourselves? Wouldn't it be wise to punish just the environmental offenders of-fenders rather than everyone? every-one? Organizations of reasonable, reasona-ble, responsible people such as the Western Association of Land Users deserve thanks from us for standing up for liberty and for raising good questions. They recognize that the right; to govern is derived from the consent of the governed gov-erned and the BLM has only the consent of distant private land states to govern us, the people of the public land states of the West. The BLM definitely does not have the consent to govern from the people they are attempting to govern. Joe Stocks Dear Sam: All of us who bought the Pack Creek (M-4) Ranch last fall have since been racking our brains trying to come up with a new, imaginative name for the ranch. For awhile we thought about keeping "M-4" as a name but then concluded that it sounds a bit medicinal... medicin-al... we might as well name the ranch "Bromo Quinine!" Somebody else came up with 'The Pack Creek Red Roof Ranch" which we agreed to for awhile until Susanne May-berry May-berry contracted a severe case of writing cramp every time she had to endorse a check. Then, I came up with what I though a brilliant name: "The Tukuhnikivatz Ranch" after Mount Tukuhnikivatz Tukuhni-kivatz in the LaSals. But no one could pronounce it let alone spell it, and the idea was tabled to my dismay. We therefore turn to all of you in Moab for help. If you have any great ideas about what our ranch should be called, would you please drop us a line. We might like your name so much that we'll even buy you a couple of steak dinners! So, how about helping help-ing us by sending your ideas to me: 656 So. 1200 East; Salt Lake City, Utah 84102. I look forward to your responses. Suesan Taylor |
