I By Alvin Reiner Washington, D.C., April 1 The U. S. Department. of Interior J has just announced that the National Park Service will be getting two 1 and one-half million dollars in order to build seven new arches, as f well as to provide for other improvements, in Arches National Park. According to spokesman Rocky T. Rayne, a recent study showed no new arches have been built since Arches was designated as a National Park. The funding was necessitated by the increased visitation, G coupled with the vibrations eminating from innumerable clicking B camera shutters, which have caused deterioration of some of the arches. It is anticipated that some of the funds will be utilized to repair some of the cracks. Rocky T. Rayne also stated that "the original contractor apparently used inferior materials in constructing the arches." One unique arch will be constructed with hardened white sandstone of the Conservative Formation. This arch, with its gaping oriface, will be named Bunker Arch. The monolith near Balanced Rock, which collapsed in early 1976, is also slated for repairs. The Fiery Furnace is scheduled to undergo a face-lifting, as due to heavy traffic, a well worn path has developed. Thus, it is no ionger a challenge to find one's way out of the Maze. In other words, the Fiery Furnace is no longer aMazing. Construction will commence on April 1, 1978, unless it falls on April Fool's Day, which is what this article is really all about. M |
