Show The tonnage of ore milled and the average tens milled per day increased over last year and exceeded the design capacity of the Lisbon uranium mining and milling operation of Rio Algom Corp. , it was revealed this week in the company's annual report for 1976. The mill head grade of ore was lower than in 1975 and lower than originally anticipated, however. The report went on to say that Rio Algom is giving increased attention to other uranium possibilities in southeastern Utah within range of the Lisbon mill. o Recovery of 143,000 pounds per year of uranium oxide is expected in late 1977 from a plant to be constructed near Copperton, southwest of Salt Lake City. The plant will recover the uranium from leach solutions used by Kennecott Copper in removing copper from overburden through precipitation. Wyoming Mineral Corporation, Littleton, Colo., a subsidiary of Western Westinghouse Electric, will construct the plant, which is to cost about $6 million , About 13 persons will be employed when the plant is fully operative. o Work continues on updating the uranium part of the Utah Geological and Mineralogical Survey's file on mineral deposits. Uranium deposits in the San Rafael River mining area have been studied by Larry M. Trimble, staff geologist and Dr. Hellmut H. Doelluig under a grant from the USGS. The report is being processed for publication as a bulletin. The San Rafael River area offers good possibilities for continued uranium production, according to the Utah agency. o Three power companies that wanted to force Westinghouse Electric Corp. to honor a contract to supply uranium at one-fourth its current cost have settled instead for cash, equipment and advice. The difference between the contracted price of $9 per pound and the present price of about $40 a pound would have cost Westinghouse an estimated $2 billion over the next 20 years. Westinghouse still faces suits from 24 utilities in Virginia and Sweden. Those cases have not been heard yet. o Atlas Corp. has agreed to pay a $65,000 penalty as part of a settlement in civil action filed against the firm by Assistant U. S. Attorney for Utah Stephen Snarr, :harging violation of the federal water pollution laws, rhe fine was levied against Atlas for discharging waste svater into the Colorado River from the Moab uranium mill. Atlas will be able to discharge waste water from ;he mill until July 1, according to the settlement. After ;hat time, it is anticipated that the company will be ecirculating all water used in the milling operation, ind thus be discharging no more waste water into the iver. |
