Show House GOP Leader Rhodes Keynotes Saturday convention John J. Rhodes, 12-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona and House Minority Leader, will keynote the Utah State Republican Party organizing convention this Saturday. June 2Sth, at the Terrace Ballroom in downtown Salt Lake City. The biennial event will select State Republican party leaders for the next two-year term. Declaring their candidacy candi-dacy for office as of this writing are: State Republican Chairman: (Incumbent Chairman, Chair-man, State Representative T. Wm. Cockayne, is not seeking a second term); Dixon Hind-ley, Hind-ley, Salt Lake City business man and past Salt Lake County Republican Chairman; Richard Richards, Ogden attorney and 2-time former State Chairman; Doug Sager, Tooele City Mayor. State Vice Chairman: Zena Hull, Salt Lake City, Incumbent; Incum-bent; Lois Lobb, Salt Lake City, a former County Vice Chairman. Other officers to be selected are those for the First and Second Congressional Districts. Dis-tricts. Chairman First District: Bill Anderson, Provo, Incumbent; Incum-bent; Frank Blair, Ogden; Claudius Stevenson, Provo. Vice Chairman First District Shirley Stewart, Bountiful, Incumbent; In-cumbent; Doris Wilson, Bountiful. Chairman Second District: Kay Cornaby, Salt Lake City, Incumbent; Jeri Taylor, Sandy. Vice Chairman Second District: Dis-trict: Jim Carrico, Kane County; Lois Iverson, St. George. The Organizing Convention will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday morning following an executive execu-tive committee meeting called for 9 a.m. to consider a motion by Jeri Taylor to allow proxy voting by executive committee members unable to attend meetings. Senator E.J. "Jake" Garn will introduce Congressman Rhodes, who is scheduled to speak at 12 noon. House Republican Leader Rhodes is considered by the Washington Post to be "one of the most influential politicians in America." He is the first Republican to be elected to the House of Representatives from the State of Arizona and his 12-term tenure is unprecedented unprece-dented in the history of the state. The former Lt. Colonel served for nearly five years in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and has earned degrees at Kansas State University and the Harvard Law School. His election as House Minority Leader was unanimous in both his first and current terms. He and Mrs. Rhodes reside in Mesa, Arizona, with 4 children. |
