Sheriff Jesse Tyler and his men made many treks into the San Kafaei country, coun-try, not only after members mem-bers of the Wild Hunch but other outlaws of lesser les-ser fame (.but equal in-famy). in-famy). Following the - - - J - ' shootout detailed here, most of the outlaws headed head-ed for Arizona. One of them, "Silver Tip" was eventually captured and charged with attempted murder. The others remained re-mained at large. Several months after the shootout, a group of outlaws came through Moab and headed into tho I I I Swf X Hook Cliffs. Shi-riff Tyler Ty-ler followed and was ambushed am-bushed and Killed. It is thought by local residents resi-dents that those outlaws may have been some of tho same ones involved in the San Rafael gun battle. Other stories which have filtered into our office of-fice include the time that S S I -J the Wild Hunch, rcturn'-iiiK rcturn'-iiiK from the bank robbery rob-bery in Telluride, stopped stop-ped in the early morning hours at the ferry boat on the Colorado River and asked to be taken across. Although the owners of the boat normally nor-mally did not make the run during darkness, when they found out who wanted to cross, they hurriedly rigged the boat and took the men across the flood-swollen river. Lula Hetenson, Hutch's sister, reported to planners plan-ners of the Hutch Cassidy Days Celebration that when the bank robbery took place, Hutch was left to hold the horses and did not actively participate partici-pate in the holdup. The robbery itself was done by the McCarty brothers and residents are in general gen-eral agreement that the McCarty boys were a bad bunch and probably responsible re-sponsible for the holdup. Both Frank and Billy McCary were killed during dur-ing a Delta bank robbery in 1893. One Moab resident recalled re-called for us this week that the Wild Bunch once visited her ranch and stole a bunch of horses. One of the horses got loose and returned home, however, she stated, it never was much good after that and was always skittish. Some of these stories, along with a number of others outlining the history his-tory of the Wild Bunch appear in Pearl Baker's book "The Wild Bunch at Robbers Roost". Both Mrs. Baker and Lula Betenson will be in Moab for the Butch Cassidy Days parade on Friday at 6 p.m. |
