Show Park Visitation Listed Here for Month of May Only visitation to the Island" in the Sky section of Canyonlands National Park showed a drop in visitation for the month of May, with all other sections of the Canyonlands Canyon-lands Complex registering regis-tering an increase in visitation. At Arches National Park, there were 38,-979 38,-979 visitors during May compared with 30.407 during the same month a year ago. This is a 13 per cent increase. Visitor use for the year at this popular area is also up with 86,385per-sons 86,385per-sons visiting there during dur-ing the first five months compared with 69.094 for the same period last year, an increase of 25 per cent. The Island in the Sky-section Sky-section show ed a drop of 11 per cent in May visitation vis-itation with 6,242 persons per-sons visiting there compared com-pared with 6,998 during the same month in 1972. Visitation for the year at Island also shows a drop with only 9,368 persons going there during 1973 compared with 11,953 for last year. Visitation in the Needles Need-les District of Canyonlands Canyon-lands show ed the sharpest sharp-est increase of any of the sections w ith a jump of 27 per cent from 4,-871 4,-871 last year to 6,199 for this year. The five month period just ended end-ed shows an increase of 16 per cent at Needles with 15.265 visitors compared with 13,197 a year ago. In the Maze District, where records have been kept for only one year, there were 351 visitors during May, compared with 304 last year, an increase of 12 per cent. Total visitation visita-tion for the year to date has been 556 visitors, compared with 411 last year. This reflects an increase of 35 per cent. Statistics at Natural Bridges National Monument Mon-ument show 8,616 visitors visi-tors during May, compared com-pared with 7,144 for last May, an increase of 21 per cent. Visitation for the y ear to date is still down from last year, however, after several slow months earlier in the season. There have been 14,194 visitors to the area during the past five months compared with 15,129 for the same period last year, a drop of 6 per cent. |
