Show join in the celebration Events for the Butch Cassidy Days Celebration and Canyonlands Rodeo have required a great deal of planning on the part of the Grand County Rodeo Committee and Moab Chamber of Commerce over the past several weeks. That planning began to bear fruit this week as some phases of the celebration got under way as early as Sunday. The Western Art Show, being held at the Jailhouse Gallery, is a first for the rodeo days celebration and gives added depth to the events of this week. Also being held this week are presentations of the melodrama "He Done Her Wrong or Wedded But No Wife". Members of the Moab Community Players began showings of the program on Tuesday and tonight (Thursday) is the final performance. The show begins at 8 p.m. and those who have seen the performance say its not to be missed. Other events connected with the celebration are a horseshoe pitching contest, melodramatic skits, and of course a parade. The parade this year, under the leadership of Connie Caouette promises to be a big one. Entries from Colorado and other states in this region, as well as more than usual local participation have combined to make this parade a great one. Adding authenticity to the Butch Cassidy Theme will be an appearance in the parade by Lula Betenson, Butch's sister, along with Pearl Baker, author of "The Wild Bunch at Robbers Roost." Dances have been planned for both nights of the rodeo with one aimed at the youth of the community on Friday and a country-western dance on Saturday. Admission to both is by donation to the oak barrel, a tradition established at most of the dances during early Moab history. The chuckwagon barbeque, to be held Saturday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Lions Park,' is the final - event before Satuday's rodeo performance and the meal should be good. Admission cost for adults is $2.50 and children under 12 are admitted for $1.25 Although the various committees and groups involved in preparations for the celebrations have gone to a great deal of work during past weeks, their efforts will have been for nothing unless they get the wholehearted support of the local townspeople. This is the biggest celebration of the year for Moab and efforts are now under way to make it even bigger. But again, its ultimate success rests with those people who live here. We urge all Moab residents to support each and every one of the activities planned for this week and to help make the Butch Cassidy Days Celebration an overwhelming success. |
