On the opening kickoff, the IVvils had the ball retunu-d lo the yanl line by Gregg Holland, one of se veral fine gains made by him during the evening. The Devils were held on the three downs and a bad pass from center resulted re-sulted in Steve Stout running for the first down. The next play was a pass and it was intercepted by a Fruita player. play-er. The Wildcats then scored on a pass to Chris Bennett. Bennett also kicked the extra ex-tra point and the team from Colorado led 7-0 with 5:10 remaining in the first quar. ter. Gregg Holland again re. turned the kickoff, this time to the 34 to give the Devils good field position. Following Follow-ing a G5 yard drive, Gregg Holland scored on a 3 yard run that put the Devils within with-in one point. Steve Stout's attempt for the PAT was' no good, but an offside penalty against the Fruita team gave the Devils another chance at the extra point. They ran for two points and were stopped short. ( On the ensuing kickoff, Steve Stout put the ball in the air and it ended up on the yard line. After making mak-ing a good stand at the Fruita Frui-ta end of the field, the Devils forced a punt on third down. With 30 seconds left in the first quarter, the punt was blocked and recovered by Paul Wyatt on the 18 yard line. A penalty against Fruita put the ball on the 10' i and from there Holland went to pay dirt for the Devils, only to have it nullified by a penalty. pen-alty. The ball was then put into play from the 7 and Davis Da-vis carried to the four. Tile gun ended the play after af-ter the end of the first quarter quar-ter with the visiting team leading by a score of 7-6. Shortly after the start of the second quarter, Stout at- . tempted a field goal which was no good. Steve Wyatt came into the game to lead the Devils at the start of the second quarter. After a good series of downs which saw Moab running and passing, Wyatt ran around end for a TD, but it was recalled, also for a penalty. Again the Devils De-vils were not to be denied as they scored seconds later on a pass to Vinnie Camber-lango, Camber-lango, to give the Devils the lead that they never relinquished. relin-quished. During the next series se-ries of downs for the Colorado Colo-rado team the Devils were led on defense by Pete Davis, Paul Wyatt, Rodney Quinn, ' Kent Dalton, with help in the secondary from Steve Wyatt and the rest of the defensive unit. The teams left the field at half with the Devils leading 13-7. The Wildcats got a break on a punt in the opening minutes of the Second quarter quar-ter when it hit Gregg Holland's Hol-land's kg and was picked up by the Fruita club. The De-vils De-vils held on a good series of defensive plays and took over after a 4th and goal situation failed. The Devils . got the ground game moving and worked in some passes . for good gains. Davis scored the next TD for Moab with Stout kicking the PAT. On . the following kickoff, Stan . Holland knocked the ball . loose from tho runner and Pete Davis recovered on the 27 yard line. A. pass found Stout wide open for the TD and he followed that by kiclc-ing kiclc-ing another extra point. That put the score 27-7 for . the Devils.. . Stout put the next kick into the end zone, and high school rules state that you cannot run out of the end zone. The quarter ended with the Devils leading 27-7. Wyatt returned at the QB slot to lead the team dur- ' ing the fourth quarter. ; He started off by hitting Cam-berlango, Cam-berlango, who made a fine catch, and then handed to Stun Holland who made a fine move, dashed through ths defense .and ran C5 yards lor Uie touchdown. Stout missed the extra point, and the score stood at 33-17. Marvin Irish and Pete Da- ' vis were leading the defense ' and forced the Wildcats to punt. After anexchange of : punts, the Devils recovered ' a fumble and a few plays later Wyatt was caught in his own end zone for a saf. ety, making the score 33 9. The game continued on at that pace with neither team gaining any great advantage. The score end.d with the Devils winning 33-9 before a large home crowd and now they face the league wars this Friday. It is a two fold big one for Moab. First, the opponent is always-tough San Juan of Blanding, and the game also highlights Homecoming Home-coming for Mab. |
