Show Dear Editor: Apparently all dentists do not agree with Dr. Raymond. Ray-mond. Professor Sir Arthu. Amies, D.D.S., C.M.S Dea:i of Faculty of Dental Science, University of Melbourne, Australia, states, "I am opposed op-posed to the artificial fluori-oanon fluori-oanon of community water supplies for a number of reasons. rea-sons. 1. It is an unscientific procedure. 2. Reports of recent re-cent investigations support previous publications which indicate the probability of long range toxic effects. 3. A number of investigators, whom I know personally are opposed to fluoridation. 4. ine procedure contravenes the principle of medical e!h-ics." e!h-ics." Nor do they agree that the fact that fluoride is a dangerous dan-gerous poison is groundless. Dr. Charles T. Betts, D.D. S. Toledo, states. "Fluorine is a poison which is accumulative accum-ulative in the body, similar to radium; no antidote is known." And Dr. Royal Lee, D.D.S., Milwaukee, statej: "Inorganic fluorine is a cumulative poison. . .it accumulates ac-cumulates in the body even when taken in very small doses. . .makes bones brittle." brit-tle." To me it is inconceivable that anyone would say that everyone should have fluoride. fluor-ide. Someone is bound to be affected by it. Dr. John J. Shea, M. D., Allergist, Dayton, Day-ton, Ohio states, "I have found well over two hundred cases of allergy to fluorides, mainly due to floride in tooth paste, vitamins and tablets. Symptoms consisted of ulcers of mouth tissue, (stomatitis) hives, eczema, ec-zema, abdominal pain, dia-rrehoa, dia-rrehoa, joint pains, nasal allergy." al-lergy." If a little fluoride- in tooth paste will do this what will fluoride in the water dc? Now I am sure there are dentists that would say fluor-ride fluor-ride is beneficial and M. D.'s that would say it is not harmful. So which, Dentis's or Doctors, are right? Those who say it is bad or tho;e ...U it t ,A nuu jy ii is gooa: Since there is so much controversy of the point I feel that it should never b-; put in the city water supply unless it is done by the vo'e of the people. Further, I fc.-l that the people should never allow it in their water until the medical profession has proven that there are no side effects. Now I suppose that what I have said and quoted will be termed as scare tactics by the proponents of fluoridation fluorida-tion but let me state that it is much better to bo scared than it is to end up with some incurable disorder, allergy al-lergy or disease that may be with you the rest of your life. Sincerely, Dahl Zohner 62 E. 1st N. Moab, Utah Dear Sam: You have probably heard of some towns that have natural na-tural fluoride In their water. Some say that no ill effects are experienced from use of this water. I think this is true, however, in the case of natural fluoridation, the fluoride present is calcium fluoride while the fluoride which Is being added to water wa-ter systms Is sodium fluor-ride. fluor-ride. Just as there is a difference dif-ference between sodium hydroxide hy-droxide (lye) nnd sodium chloride (table salt), then.: is a difference between calcium cal-cium fluoride and sodinm fluoride The difference that I nm concerned with is the fact that sodium fluoride is more corrosive and also causes a calcium precipitate from water containing calcium, from milk, or from other foodstuffs containing cal clum. Calcium (lime) Is usually us-ually present in water where a whilo or grey residue Is left on the tea ketllo or where ever the water lias cv.'iponiled. This same milium mi-lium is what kidney atones are composed of. I have had several major surgical operations which resulted re-sulted in removal of a-ureter tube and replacement with a plastic ureter. As a result of having this plastic ureter, I have been directed by my doctor to not take any anii-acid anii-acid medication containing calcium because a precipitate precipi-tate of calcium would probably prob-ably close this plastic tube and cause possible loss of that kidney. If we have fluoride put in our water system I will probably use water which I Mill haul from the spring at Lion's Park, for my per- ennnt pnlin.'irv nppds. If I had a well I could use well water for my other needs and would then not need to purchase any water from the city. I suppose it ii i-gal for the city to add flourides to the water, however, I doubt if the city could force you to purchase medicated water. wa-ter. Sincerely, Ruby McLean |
