Show tAatheson Urges Sportsmen To Get Involved "Hunters need to get more involved in decisions regarding regard-ing wildlife and land management," manage-ment," Democratic gubernatorial guberna-torial candidate Scott M. Matheson said today. "They should participate, along with stockmen, government representatives repre-sentatives and landowners, in determining the best ways to protect and preserve deer habitat, and should be familiar with habitat requirements." Mr. Matheson emphasized the need for balance between economic growth and wildlife preservation. "Our fish, game and waterfowl constitute an important resource in this state. It is a resource that needs to be carefully monitored moni-tored and developed. Our decision to restrict the deer hunt to bucks only is a wise one. and will allow the herds to recover from recent hard winters and encroaching civilization. civil-ization. But the herds will never fully recover until we guarantee them the foliage and acreage they require." "The Division of Wildlife Resources currently holds six public meetings a year throughout the state. Hunters should be aware of these gatherings and should attend them. This is the best way for them to express their interest. We need to encourage cooperation between the com- peting factions. No one in this state wants to see our deer population become a thing of the past." Mr. Matheson observed that over 200,000 people are expected to participate in the hunt this year, and cautioned them to use sound judgement and safe methods. |
