October 20, that the Comnuin.v Action Program in this county will -,c discontinued j immediately-including the CAP spon- sored Headstart Proiam--if another j sponsor for that prognm cannot be found. I The statement from Coi.missioners D. I L. Taylor. Harvey Merrel and A. Dan I Holyoak came following a hour-and-a- J half public hearing w hich dtw over fifty Moab and Grand County resjents, most of w hom spoke during the evning. Representatives of the locaCommun- ity Action administration in C-and, San j Juan, Emery, and Carbon Coufies were j in attendance at the meeting, bt only a few of them spoke. The majority-jf those I urged Grand County to withdraw from I the program immediately, cijng a number of reasons. The withdrawal 0f j Grand County could mean the endvf the ! program in the entire region. It tok all four counties to come anywhere tear minimum population requirements for j setting up such a program, and the los of j Grand County's population from e grouping could mean that the others Cq I no longer continue due to a lack f I numbers - At an earlier hearing, held during the ' month of September, the Commission ' played host to another "standing room only" crowd, but at that time, the bulk ol testimony was from residents of Carbon and Fmery Counties, who urged Grand County to stay w ith the program to keep it i aliv.'. It was because local commissioners j didn't feel a good enough cross-section of Grand County residents was heard from that last Wednesday's hearing was I scheduled. I Conducted by Commission Chairman ' D. L. Taylor, the hearing moved right J along, and was marred only occasionally ! by applause and laughter from the audience. Commissioner Taylor opened i the meeting by explaining the question i before the Commission; by outlining j finances of the entire four-county CAP j organizaton, and by answering some general questions on the program by I members of the audience. I Many of those testifying stated that I they did not object to the continuation of j the Headstart education program for j disadvantaged pre-schoolers, but felt that this was not reason enough to continue with the CAP alliance. Formal action on i the matter will be taken by the j Commission next Monday at their regular j meeting, according to Commissioner Harvey Mcrrcil. J |
