Show BEST BILL CONGRESS PASSED. About the best bill the late Congress passed was the bill which declared that when a foreign-born man., who having been naturalized in this country, absents himself from the country five years, he 6hall be declared expatriated and the Government will no longer protect him in foreign lands as an American citizen. That bill ought to have been passed years ago. It has been a custom repeatedly for men to come here with no purpose except to get naturalized, thus to evade military and other duties which they owe to their native country, then to go back and spend the balance of their lives in the land where they were born, all the time claiming the protection of the Government of the United States. The bill will save our country a great deal of trouble in the future; the want of it has made our Government a great deal of annoyance in the'past, and has more than once jeopardized our good relations rela-tions with foreign powers. |
