Show . NEW NEVADA STAMPEDE. ' A stampede for Italian canyon, eight miles south of Austin, Nev., has been started by discoveries made by a sheep-herder. sheep-herder. The man was In the employ of George Watt, the well-known sheepman of that locality, and while in the mountains moun-tains he discovered some cropplngs that carried gold visible to the naked eye. These were taken Into Austin and assays of the rock showed that the yellow metal averaged 8142 a ton. As soon as the value of the rock became, known to the people of Austin a run for the Italian canyon country was made, and every vehicle In that town was pressed into service. . By Monday night the country had been staked out for a considerable area with no fewer than seventy-five locations. Regardless of the storms, the stampede continued through-out through-out the week. Those who are returning say that the country Is mineralised for a considerable distance round about the original discovery, discov-ery, while the ledge that was uncovered by the sheepherder shows free gold in a number of places. Development work Is being done by almoet all of the new locators In Italian canyon, and Austin seems to be almost deserted, while those who have made a trip to the new country claim that good results are being obtained by a number of the new locators. Old-timers say that more than forty , years ago three Mexicans discovered gold quarts several miles north of the new strike and took out considerable money with the crude methods they had to handle han-dle the ore. Since that time the property prop-erty has remained idle and there has been no attempt to prospect that district, though it has been known that there waa considerable mineral in these mountains. |
