Conner, a fireman on the Denver A Rio Grande, was instantly killed near Wellington, about 136 miles east of Salt Lake City, at 9:20 o'clock last night. Conner Con-ner came to this city six weeks ago and had been employed by the Denver A Rio Grande Just one month. The train on which he was fireman left Helper,-east-bound, shortly after 6 o'clock yesterday afternoon In charge of Conductor George Hartwell. Engine No. 907, with Engineer George Chadwlck at the throttle, was pulling the extra. - ." Exactly how the accident occurred Is not known. Conner 'was either leaning out of the opening between the engine and tender, or fell from that position Just as the engine crossed what Is 'known as "Iron Bridge No. 612 A." His head came In contact with one of the iron supports of the bridge and he was knocked from the train. As quickly as possible the train was brought to a standstill and the crew hurried hur-ried back to the bridge. They found Conner Con-ner head, with . his skull badly crushed. His body was placed in the caboose and taken to Mound, where It was placed on a train coming to this city. The body, accompanied by a brother of Conner, arrived ar-rived In this city shortly after 2 o'clock this morning. It was taken to the undertaking un-dertaking establishment of E. J. O'Don nell, where It was prepared for ship-' ment to Mattoon, 111. Conner was 25 years -old and came here about six weeks .ago. Previously he had been employed as a fireman on the "Big Four" system but came West to be near his brother, C. A. Conner, who Is traveling travel-ing engineer of division So. t, of . the Denver A Rio Grande system. He' had been employed by the D. & R..G. Just one month to the day of his death. Conner leaves a son S years old, who lives with bis mother and father in Mat-toon, Mat-toon, 111. One brother Is engaged in railroad rail-road business in Arizona and another is an electrical engineer in Mattoon, 111. There are also two sisters. |
