Two ot more persona were killed and upward of a acore seriously injured in a terrific explosion ex-plosion of gas in a restaurant at 114-116 114-116 West Second street, between Main and Broadway, shortly before noon today. to-day. The explosion totally demolished the two-story brick building, destroyed three small business houses and littered the streets with debris. The whole front of the building was blown into the street. The side walls collapsed, nairowly missing several pedestrians pe-destrians on the streets. The roof and second floor of the building was lifted upward and fell back, crashing to the floor, burring many in the ruins. Upwards of twenty persons were taken ta-ken out immediately after the explosion explo-sion and removed to the receiving and other hospitals. It is believed several of them were fatally injured. Woman Crushed to Death. The dead body of one woman could be seen under the ruins in the rear of the restaurant. Her hand was protruding pro-truding from the debris of brick and mortar. She wore a hat, and was evidently evi-dently not an employee. She had been crushed flat to the floor by the terrific weight. The damage extended from "Jim's" chowder-house at 112 West Second street to 118. on the alley, which was occupied by H. L. Yerger, a tailor. The explosion occurred in the rear room of the Cressati restaurant, which is between be-tween the two other numbers. The restaurant res-taurant and tailor shop were completely wrecked. The explosion was felt all over town. |
