Show Everybody's Job A THOUSAND humanitarians of this community commu-nity meet tonight at a dinner which will be paid lor by themselves to organize as a mercy army and to receive final instructions before they take the field tomorrow morning to begin the 1937 solicitation for the Community Chest. Thereafter until November 23, every nook of the tity will be covered in the effort to gather in $1(5,000, set as this year's goal. It is this war chest which will finance the work of the twenty-one agencies of the organization in the year head 111 meeting Hi" thatleiigc uf four public enemies Hunger, Disease, Crime and Despair. To crown this endeavor with success is everybody's every-body's job everybody who is able to make contributions, con-tributions, large or small, to assure that suffering neighbors, beset by misfortune, may be helped long the hard road. The Community Chest includes associated organizations or-ganizations which minister to the needs of the aged, the stricken and the troubled who have nowhere no-where else to look for helpfulness. It strives to keep together families foundering on the rocks of poverty and misunderstanding, not alone that father and mother may be saved from drifting apart, but more that children may be spared becoming be-coming public charges and be spared ventures that lead to evil doing and crime. It sustains character building agencies for boys and girls, looking to their better training for citizenship and constructive service in the community when . their time comes to assume new responsibilities a workers, husbands and wives, householders ' and neighbors. It lends a friendly and helpful hand to the orphan and to the homeless. It affords af-fords needed care to mothers lacking in, necessities necessi-ties for themselves and their newborn infants. In a thousand other ways it plays the role of compassionate com-passionate friend to the underprivileged who wage an unequal struggle against forces they have no means of overcoming. The Community Chest does not duplicate the work of any governmental agency. Its volunteer volun-teer workers during the one week's drive beginning begin-ning tomorrow extend to everyone opportunity to fulfill his urge to be charitable, merciful and helpful toward his fellow humans In times of their adversity. Every contributor to the fund rnay rest with the easy conscience of having performed per-formed a Christ-praised duty vicariously more effectively and understanding than if attempted Individually, That there la great need In the communities ef this state, despite all efforts of federal and local government agencies, is revealed in a report re-port of the state department of public welfare Just completed and released. Only in Daggett, Duchesne and Rich counties has there been any diminution in appeals for assistance. Not only that, but in every other county there has been an increase. This is a conclusive barometer of aituations to be faced by the Community Chest here. There is no direct relationship between these tax-supported relief agencies and the Community Com-munity Chest, but there is dependable indication indica-tion that the need for its service will be greater nd more insistent than in the year closing. The function of the Community Chest here is beyond question a needed social service. Its record rec-ord of performance is one of efficiency ahd prudent pru-dent economy. It is worthy and deserving. We commend it to all to whom its volunteer army of solicitor come. Theirs, too, is a selfless service ser-vice rendered freely in behalf of others with no reward except the satisfaction that warms the human heart in the knowledge that they have had a part in a wholesome and necessary service to fellow beings helplessly facing Hunger, Disease, Dis-ease, Crime and Despair. |
