II (UP) A free throw in the final halt minute of pley enabled University of Southern South-ern California to defeat California, 28-27. and win the basketball championship cham-pionship of the southern division of the Pacific coast conference hers last night Seven thousand screaming' spectators specta-tors suddenly hushed and waited with bated breeth aa "Nemo" Nelmer, Trojan Tro-jan forward, stepped to the free throw line and confidently tossed the gift shot that broke t tie and gave Southern South-ern California victory in one of the htrdeet battled cage games ever teen here. Seconds later Bob Ersklne, hefty Trojan guard, fouled Hal Eifert California Cal-ifornia forward. The gun barked the end of the five minute overtime period pe-riod as Eifert tttempted to toss a tree throw that would have tied tht score and necessitated a second overtime period. His shot rolled around the rim snd decided to stay out bringing t mighty groan from tht California stand:. Trailing at halftlme, 11-7, California Califor-nia staged a brilliant comeback to lead by 1 point with a minute remaining remain-ing to play. Lee Gutter, rengy Tre-lan Tre-lan center, was fouled by Eifert during dur-ing that minute and made good his free toss to tit tht score tt 23-all and send the game Into an extra period. The teams meet again tonight but the Trojans needed only last night's victory to assura them their tint championship to many years. |
