' The woolen service 'uniform U new; the khaki. is the present field service-nniforta, and consists' of blouse and trousers, bronze metal ornaments and devices being worn upon it. ' Most 'of the uniforms prescribed by the new order are already owned by the older officers offi-cers of the army, but they will have to alter their old dress coats into full dress coats, put new devices and ornaments on their khaki uniforms and possibly possi-bly get new dress coats, white nniforms and woolen uniforms. They will have to get sabers where they now have swords, 'new collar devices and insignia, and caps instead of helmets,, but the order, though extremely comprehensive, does not require every officer to get new everything it calls f or, . There seems to be Mine sense in requiring officers on duty in Washington to keep on hand such elaborate wardrobes, but to compel army men at Fort Douglas Doug-las and other Western posts 10 purchase all these gaudy trappings is the height of folly.' Officers stationed at the Western forts are trained to fight, not to play society. THE NEW ARMY CLOTHES. Uncle Sanr does not like the appearance of his "sojer" men. They don't dress to suit him in these piping days of peace. And so the War department has decided to order the regular army officers to dress better hereafter. The new uniform idently designed to make the fighting men look pret- .' tier in peace and more workmanlike in war. This Is all very nice for Uncle Sam and tho bureau chiefs, but what about the Captains and Lietn;vi Where Is their money with which to pay for all these clownish trappings to come from? To buy the new clothes would cost $900, almost a year's salary of either a Captain or a Lieutenant. It is the right policy for the War department to require army men to be neat and soldierly in dress, but this-new this-new order will work a decided hardship pon more than two-thirds of the officers in the army. It should be modified. Under the new scheme officers will have to own a full dress uniform, a dress uniform, a white uniform, a woolen service uniform, a khaki uniform and besides these they are authorized to wear a special full dress uniform and a mess jacket. The full dress uniform is about the same' as that now worn, except in detail. It consists of a frock coat, trousers or breeches, gold sword belt and a full Cwvi hat, which takes the place of the bidtous hel-: hel-: ' t. Tie other changes are in the details of the or: |
