L The beet-sugar beet-sugar men have practically abandoned their fight Michigan and Minnesota -have withdrawn their open opposition to the reciprocity treaty, and will not attempt to defeat It. California still holds out against the tariff reductions proposed, but will not filibuster to hold up the treaty. The treaty must be ratified rati-fied before January Jlst unless negotiations negotia-tions for an extension of time should be completed. V. The Minnesota delegation have cult the fight because they found that the I sentiment of the people of their State 1 was against them. Minnesota is not a ! manufacturing State, exct In the production pro-duction of flour, which, it is true, would be a staple article of export to Cuba under Increased trade growing out of the treaty. Since the last session some beet sugar refineries have been bought In by the sugar trust. Through the operation of the treaty the sugar trust will secure its raw materia! for the refining of sugar at a reduction of 20 per cent in the tariff. . California still holds out against tariff 1 reduction. That State is interested in sugar beets, but is more interested in fruits, and she looks with .suspicion on reciprocity treaties with tropical countries, coun-tries, having the British West Indies |
