Its Happy Vagaries Enable it to Spit Every Human Condition. ; The climatic conditions of California, when closely considered, upset .completely .com-pletely all one's preconceived notions of the relation between latitude and tern, ptrature. The latitude of San Diego, the southern city of the Stats, Is about that of Charleston. South Care Una, while Los Angeles lies a little farther south than Memphis, Tennessee. I From these facts one is apt to coa-elude coa-elude that although Southern California may have a sub-tropical climate, adapted adapt-ed to the growth of citrus fruits, yet the northern part ot the State must havs the rigorous winters of the North Atlantic At-lantic States, or et Iowa or Nebraska, on the upper Mississippi. Four hundred miles north of Los Angeles An-geles and five hundred north of San Diego the summers are warmer and tha winters but little more severe than In the cities named, AU along the coast the cUmate Is cool during the summer with considerable low fog near the ocean, which during the day floats up to the summits of the Coast Range. This gives an abundance ot moisture and an equable temperature. During winter this belt is almost frostless, and the rainfall Is, except In the extreme south, from twenty-five to fifty Inches annually. The valley belt, extending- six hundred miles parallel to the coast. Is quite warm through the summer, with scarcely! scarce-ly! any rain from May to October. In winter It la colder than on the coast, with much rain. In many of the northern valleys the palm, flsj and olive find a congenial borne, while the orange and lemon reach perfection, ripening from four to six weeks earlier than In the more southern countries.
