Show Ti .3 City Council and Srasllpox. The Telegram hopes . there will be no besi' ta'y on the part of the Council with regard to granting the-request of the Health Commissioner f rir .two "plain clothes" quarantine inspectors. Since . December 1st there has been only, one inspector on dijty to guard the 307 houses which have been quarantined quar-antined in alt Lake for smallpox, diphtheria and 8(iurlet .fever. Under these, circumstances . it is not strange that smallpox has extended its lines' until it hsi . reached the epidemic stage. The city has been too : poor to employ quarantine inspectors while smallpox has been increasing until in point of num- - Wis it has almost Teached the century mark, but there has been an, abundance of money to meet a wholesale advance in the salaries of city employees. Buch utter disregard for the public safety as this is criminal. Think of it, one quarantine inspector and 307 houses quarantined in four months! Such a situation furnishes splendid material for grand jury investigation. But even with an - incompetent, -worthless Council that is not especially hostile to the smallpox germ, and utterly unable to grasp the seriousness of the situation, withholding the funds necessary to successfully fight the disease, the enlightened en-lightened people of Salt Lake have asserted theni-se-Tves. Aroused to the .danger which threatened th: city they have become quarantine inspectors wlio serve without pay. As the Health Commissioner Commis-sioner says, "they are becoming our ablest allies." IiPa word the people, have acted while this Council-nttbiic Council-nttbiic makeshift has played into the hands of smallpox. small-pox. Rout out these smallpox promoters who have maIe such a determined struggle to cripple the -Hwtith department and prevent the inforcement of the quarantine regulations. Uncover them and let's" seShow they look in the open. And when we kick thbi out in the sunlight why not complete a good jofcby yanking them before the grand jury and investigating in-vestigating their relations with the smallpox germ? Salt Lake at this stage of its growth cannot afford to; have its future imperiled by a clique of barn-etqrming barn-etqrming Councilmen.' Let the people demand these extra men for the Health department and continue con-tinue their great work of aiding in the enforcement cf the quarantine regulations. |
