A largely-ttsnded largely-ttsnded antl-Smoot meeting was held in the First Congregational church here uaday afternoon, which was presided over by Bishop Earl Cranston. Addresses Ad-dresses were made by Mm Teunis Ham- Un, Charles M. Owen, Dr. R. H. McKlm and Mrs. Marie Weed, the latter desig-WQrSnioot desig-WQrSnioot - "member of the hier-v' hier-v' hT of BaaL.' Mrs. Weed In her address said that the original Joseph Smith, founder of Mormonism, had two wives, and at the close of. the meeting a lively verbal tilt took place between her and Joseph M. Smith of Lamoni, la-, grandson of Joseph Jo-seph Smith, head of the Joaephites, who disputed the accuracy of this statement, state-ment, . Mrs. Weed in concluding hex address said: "The infamous Mormon system originated orig-inated in the practical joke of the professed pro-fessed free lover and charlatan, and its growth and power prove that the monstrous mon-strous doctrine is kept alive by the fa-' fa-' natical loyalty of its devotees." . But one of the . witnesses for the prosecution i known to have reached the capital. -This is Recorder Nicholson of the Temple. Attorney Tayler of the prosecution, who ifl resume charge' of the case at today's hearing, says if witnesses for whom subpoenas have been issued could he secured there would be no difficulty in establishing that at least a dozen p)ural marriage ceremonies have been performed by church officials since the manifesto. Mr. Tayler admits that the cafe is waning, but expects that testimony testi-mony which will be forthcoming during the closing sessions of the trial will revive re-vive it. |
