Show Doing It Wtll. The tendency of the times tov.v.:-;! ; : uilisin- is nowhere shown more clearly tha:i : theatrical business. Hundreds of stars who won f;; in the legiti-mateM legiti-mateM are deserting it and entering vaudeville. They have less expense, less risk and the financial returns are often larger. The reason is that in vaudeville an actor pr act-ies act-ies HAS TO DO BUT ONE THING AND TO SUCCEED SUC-CEED IT MUST BE DONE WELL. IT IS MERE LY SPECIALISM. The lawyer of today makes a specialty of something. some-thing. So does the physician or surgeon. The old-fashioned old-fashioned general practitioner is seldom found now-udavs. now-udavs. - THE WORLD WANTS MEN WHO CAN DO THINGS WELL. They will be in demand long after af-ter they are 40 or 50! It is the-handy man who can do half a dozen things indifferently well who will be the first to lose his position. f- In viw of" the fact, our modern college system seems to be lagging behind the procession. Young men spend four years in college acquiring a knowl-ixlge knowl-ixlge of many things which is bound to be smattering smatter-ing and for practical purposes generally useless. We do not deny that a college course broadens the mind. The man who has dipped into the classics is better e quipped than the man who knows, nothing of them, but they are an adjunct to rather than the foundation founda-tion of an education. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. FOR WHAT IS TnE AVERAGE COLLEGE COL-LEGE GRADUATE FIT WHEN nE LEAVES HIS UNIVERSITY? If he desires to enter a profession he must expend ex-pend more time and money getting a technical education. edu-cation. By that time he has forgotten about all he learned in his college course. At first hh education is general, but it must afterward be special to fit him for his life work. The man must ''get into the game" early these clays if he wishes to succeed, yet the college man is handicapped by the loss of 'the years it has taken him to get a double education. HE MAY WIN THE GREATER SUCCESS IN THE END, BUT THE PRESENT OUTLOOK IS THAT HE IS GOING TO HAVE A TOUGH TIME OF IT IN THE EARLY KTACiEK. The men who have been specializing P while he has been in college will have got so far . ahead that it will lK,diffieult for him to overtake them. We believe iu colleges and college men, but we think the young man who will have his own way to make when he enters upon life had better reflect be-' be-' fore he goes to college. IF IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT HE SUCCEED FINANCIALLY HE WILL DO WELL TO ELIMINATE THE COLLEGE COURSE AND BEGIN TO SPECIALIZE AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. |
