Marshal Mauss of Murray at noon arrested Christian Lax sen at Bingham Junction on Suspicion of being the man who assaulted Mrs. Schwan. Lar- sen Is known to have left Sandy at 7 o'clock at night, and at 4:30 Tuesday Tues-day morning was back at Bingham Junction. He was unable to give a coherent account of where he had been. The officers are also looking for two other men. , Mrs. Schwan is not yet able to see Larson so that the officers do not ' ' know whether they have the right man or not. him a meager outline of what had oo . curred. Fiend Wore a Mask. She told her husband that the man had concealed his features with a mask of some kind, and that he had only left the house five minutes before. Schwan was furious. Search for Assailant. Calling a doctor and! notifying Town Marshal Mauss of the crime, Schwan ' secured a revolver and went in search of the assailant. - . Mrs. Schwan was seriously injured and i unable to leave her bed. As soon as Marshal Mauss was noti- . fled he and a posse of deputies and cltl-sens cltl-sens began a searoh for the brute, but were unable to find him. Other Attempts Made. It was then learned that attempts had been made to enter three other houses . during the earlier hours of the night, none of which was successful. Mrs. White, who conducts a millinery establishment, reported to Marshal Mauss that at 11:30 o'clock Monday night she was awakened by a man who was endeavoring to force his way through a rear window of her rooms back of her millinery store. She screamed and the man fled. Spring Catch Snapped. At 12:80 o'clock City Recorder William Bishop was awakened by some one at work upon one of the windows of his house. The screen had been cut out and the window had been raised. The snapping of a spring catch on the window awakened awak-ened Bishop, who ran to the rear of the house in time to get a fleeting glimpse of a man running across lots and Jumping fences. The man disappeared ln the darkness before Mr. Bishop could open Are on him with a revolver. Man Under Suspicion. A man who was recently discharged from the Murray Jail after having worked out a sentence, is suspected of the crime. The meager description given by Mr. Bishop, Mrs. White and Mrs. Schwan is said to tally in some respects with this man. Mrs. Schwan says that the man. when he told her to keep still, spoke without foreign accent, and that she is almost certain that he Is not a Greek or Slav. An atrocious assault was committed upon Mrs. Gustave Schwan of Murray, wife of Gustave Schwan, a well-known assayer, employed at the American Smelting and Refining company's plant, between 1 o'clock and 2 o'clock Tuesday morning. Mrs. Schwan was seriously Injured. Lynching Is Likely Excitement In Murray is at fever heat, and if the assailant is captured and Identified an effort may be made to lynch him. The Schwan family lives in a cottage on Seventeenth South street, near the main street of the little smelter town. Husband Was at Work. Mr. Schwan was at his work, as he was on night shift, and his wife and children were alone In the house. Mrs. Schwan was asleep in the bedroom, bed-room, and a candle was burning near the bed. Attempts at Other Houses. Her assailant, who had. it was afterward after-ward learned, made several attempts to enter other houses in Murray, but who had been frightened away, saw the candle-light and went to the rear of the house. Stealthily opening a window, he entered en-tered the kitchen and proceeded to the bedroom in which Mrs. Schwan was asleep. - He extinguished the candle and awakened his victim. "Who's that?" she cried, as she awakened. "Keep still," said a gruff voice, and Mrs. Schwan screamed for help. . Then began a terrible struggle. Fought for Her Honor. Mrs. Schwan fought her assailant desperately, screaming at the top of her voice. The man then placed one hand over Mrs. Schwan's mouth, and with the other beat and choked her until she was rendered almost unconscious and wholly whol-ly powerless. . The fiend then accomplished his purpose. pur-pose. Daughter Attempts Rescue. A daughter, 7 years old, who was asleep in the adjoining room, was awakened by the noise of the struggle. Rushing into the dark bedroom, she screamed and attempted to give aid to her mother. Seizing the assailant by the hair, she clung there un,til felled to the floor by a blow of his flat on her head. She ran to the telephone and attempted at-tempted to call for help. Knocked Child Senseless. The brute saw what she was doing, and still clinging to the throat of his victim, struck the child a crushing blow on the temple with his fist, rendering her unconscious. Then he returned to his other awful crime. Mrs. Schwan. who had revived for a moment,' realized that she oould not overpower her assailant. With great presence of mind she resolved re-solved to get a clue that would later lead to his capture. Tore Button From Coat. Seizing the coat of the man, she struggled until she succeeded In tearing tear-ing from his coat one of the buttons, which was afterward found on the floor beside the bed. This button, is peculiarly made, and It is believed will be a most valuable clue. Escaped Just in Time. After assaulting Mrs. Schwan a second sec-ond time, the man left the house, making ma-king bis escape but Ave minutes before the return of the woman's husband. Victim Was Unconscious. When the husband entered the house Mrs. Schwan had not yet regained consciousness, con-sciousness, and his daughter was lying on the floor, insensible, with the blood pouring from a ragged wound In her head.
