Show WAS CAUGHT NAPPING. Representative- Clayton of Alabama comes up with his four-acre smile after election and defeat of his party has not made him the least bit grum. "We were caught napping." says the gentleman. ' Alabama hid a good old gentleman once who presided over one of the Circuit courts, and one day he was caught napping. It was this way: "A fellow was being tried for cheating cheat-ing and swindling yes. sir, swindling in a horse trade. You see we have some pretty swift horse traders In my State. The evidence was being given, but the good old Judge seemed deeply engrossed in studying out the formation of a cobweb in one corner of the courthouse court-house while the lawyer was questioning the witness about the character of the prisoner at the bar. " 'Isn't the. prisoner called pretty sharp? He would give a bad horse for a good one any time, wouldn't he?' asked the lawyer. "The question was scarcely asked before be-fore the Judge said: 'What fool wouldn't?' "The Judge saw he was caught, and all that he could do was to add: 'What the court has unintentionally said should have no weight in this case.' "He was caught napping." |
