Show HUGHES THREATENED WEST ' AND SWORE VENGEANCE, SAYS WITNESS KELLEY. At the afternoon session of the Inquest, In-quest, Patrolman C. W. Hsen described the position in .which West's body was discovered. He also stated that he saw West about 6 o'clock that night, and that he was drunk. . The police learned during, the afternoon after-noon that J. W. Kelley. an important witness, was making preparations w leave town. This was considered a bad sign for Hughes, and Kelley was promptly arrested. . His testimony at the Inquest was important im-portant enough to Justify the police in holding him. Kelley Was Close at Hand. Kelley was In Hughes' room the night of. the tragedy and, according to hla story, he and Hughes went to the room over an hour before West's tumble from the window. They left the room, saw West in the hall, and returned to the negro's room. , Shortly before 9 o'clock Hughes left the room, Kelley swore, and closed the door behind him. Returning in about ten minutes, he said there was some whisky in sight. Hughes then took Kelley to the door and pointed to, a bottle, which sat under the window, at the end of the hall. He got it, and the two drank part of It. Kelley also heard Hughes and West hatvlng words over some liquor Sunday night, and heard Hughes threaten to be revenged on West. Detective George Chase testified that he had fount the liquor bidden behind some bedding in Hughes' room, and that the negro acted suspiciously. He said Kelley attempted to shut the detectives de-tectives out of the room while the investigation in-vestigation was in progress. Hughes Denies Quarrel. When Hughes took the stand he denied de-nied that he was out of his room after he entered it with Kelley and swore that he found the whisky under the window in his room, thirty feet from where Kelley and the others saw it. He said that he had never had words with West or any other person over the price of some liquor. Hughes was then excused and the inquest adjourned until 10 o'clock this morning. ' |
