When the. door of the Pope's apartment was. opened the aged Pontiff was revealed standing on the' threshold and his hand waa extended,- awaiting hla guest.' His Holinesa -was dressed in robes of white and a red. velvet cape bordered with ermine. er-mine. , Even King Edward paused a moment mo-ment upon' seeing the Pontiff in his vbite garments. The Pope's face was tha color of ivory, but. he moved without aid and with no apparent difficulty. From his entire per-aon per-aon there seemed to emanate sentiments of benevolence and spirituality. The King and the head of the rhurch claimed hand. and1 exchanged a few words fn French. King Edward passed within the papal apartment, the door waa cloaed and the Pope and hia guest were left alone. King-Edward remained with the Pontiff for twenty minutes. A bell was then rung and King Edward's suite waa admitted ad-mitted and presented to the Pope. This little ceremony seemed to please the Pope immensely. At its conclusion King Edward Ed-ward took hla leave, the Pope crossing the room at hia side and saying hla last words at the door.- From, tha Vatican King Edward passed through tha plaxxa of St. Peter, where he waa warmly greeted In English by a number num-ber of Scotch pilgrims now in Rome, who shouted.
