April 25. Two motives for the murder of Madonla, the .victim of the "barrel mystery, by the Mafia are advanoed by the authorities. They U'i tb;at the gan" had robbed both jr De rrlemo and Madonla and wanted f the latter out of the way so that their theft would not be discovered. 1 They think. tUso. that Madonla had y. threatened to xpose their countirfeit-Ing countirfeit-Ing operations and considered that he knew log much for an outsider. They alao cumstder it probable that he had roy. which v as taken from him. The police and secret service ofll .ial. working- together In this case, have learned that when De Priemo was "ent to Sing Sing he had a good deal of property, most of which was "in the form of caah. The amount of this money mon-ey is said by some of the highest officials offi-cials interested In the case to-have b-en a much aa J25.000. The money had been turned over to the gang to be kept for De Priemo. but instead of preserving preserv-ing It Intact they are supposed to have . divided it among themselves. Madonla had spnt $1000 to New York t be handed to Morello and used in his brother-in-law's defense. When Madonla came to New York, according to the theory of the official. the gang concluded they would better appear friendly with him, as the easiest way of lulling his suspicions, and they detailed Fanaro to act as Maionia'a friend. It was Fanaro who took Madonla Ma-donla to the office of the lawyers, and who was seen with him at different times by the secret service men. It is learned that there had been some differences among the gang arising o-Jt of the conviction of De Priemo. De Priemo thought the other members of the gang, especially Morello, had not stood by him. There Is no doubt In the minds of the authorities that Madonia got from De Priemo at Sing Sing Information Infor-mation that would have sent most of the gang to prison had he disclosed it to the proper officials, and that they determined de-termined to kill him to close his mouth. Something of the tremendous in- ' fluence of the Mafia on the. Bast Side came to light when two central office detectives discovered that a defense fund reaching nearly $10,000 had already al-ready been raised In the Italian section sec-tion to secure the liberation of the suspects sus-pects now under arrest. Threats of sudden and violent death, it was learned, have been used to extort contributions con-tributions to this fund from every Italian Ital-ian and Sicilllan business man on the East Side. |
