Show HARRIMAN SAYS CUT-OFF WILL SQON BE FINISHED Railroad King Makes Inspection if Track Acrosstbc Lake, but Is Not Communicative. E. H. Harriman, the power behind the throne of the great railroad system bearing his name, is today visiting the Lucin cut-off for the first time, in company com-pany with Chief Engineer Hood of the Southern Pacific and a number of other officials, His special train arrived in Ogden yesterday afternoon at 8:15 and started west for the lake at 7 o'clock. ' ' s While in Ogden Mr. Harriman remained in his private car working at his desk and declined to see anyone who did not have business with him. Talking with a Telegram representative the railroad king declined to discuss dis-cuss the reported consolidation of the Oregon Railway & Navigation company and the Short Line and the removal of the Short Line offices to Portland, except ex-cept to declare positively that there Is nothing definite of that kind being considered con-sidered by him. .' In speaking of the Lucin cut-off. Mr. Harriman said the work was progressing progress-ing satisfactorily and would be pushed to completion within a short time. He also corroborated a statement made by President Burt of the Union Pacific to the effect that Improvement work between Echo and Ogden on the Union Pacific would be vigorously prosecuted. The members of the party traveled in their special cars to a point about two miles west of Promontory point on the cut-off, where a fine new launch was in waiting to convey them' to the end of the track on the other side of the lake. The special train returned to Ogden and started around the lake to meet them on the other side. From there the party will proceed directly to San Francisco. |
