Hot Springs, are lndigrnant because of the lack of attention they say the Waterworks Wa-terworks department Is giving: the canal ca-nal which flows In that district I This canal has become clogred with flotsam and refuse to such an extent t that the water has risen so high that all Irrigation and city ditches which ordinarily ordi-narily empty into it have been filled with 4,back water." These have no other outlet than the canal and as a consequence many-of these have oversowed their banks and have made a swamp of a part of the district comrlained of. This water has stood so long in the canal and in the ditches that it has become stagnant, and the noisome odor arising from it is so oftenslve as to render life a burden for those who reside re-side thereaboutjs. The conditions are so offensive and unsanitary that an outbreak of typhoid or other pestilential disease In that quarter would not be at all surprising to physicians who have visited the neighborhood and who have seen the actual state of affairs. Residents of the district say they have not! fled the Waterworks department depart-ment of the condition of the big canal, and to have repeatedly requested that It be cleaned. In order that the stag., nant water may have a chance to flow away. . ' They also state that their requests have been ignored. Those who live on the immediate banks of the ditch are considering the advisability of holding a mass meeting to take steps to secure an abatement of the evil, which they claim could easily be eradicated by the prompt action of the Waterworks department.' |
