Quarreled Over Trifling Affair. I The men who had been chumming together since Brown's admission to the penitentiary on January 6th. had a quarrel over some trifling affair yesterday yester-day afternoon. There seemed to be no particular hard feeling between the men when they went to their cells after supper, but when they filed out into the corridor this morning Hamilton ran at Brown and smashed him over the head with an iron bar which he had niewura i rum mo ceil. He gave Brown absolutely no warning, warn-ing, according to the statements of the other convicts . who "saw the trouble, and no words passed between them. Hamilton again hit Brown, who was knocked down. , Han lack for JTrJfs."-' Brown ran upstairs to his cell and secured se-cured a knife . which he had secreted in the mattreps of his bed. and returned to meet Hamilton who was closely pursuing pur-suing him. r Hamilton struck Brown again over the head with the bar. which was eighteen inches long and an inch and a half wide and weighed probably six pounds. Brown lunged at Hamilton with the knife and reached him back of the right axilla, penetrating his lung to a depth -of over three inches. Hamilton gave Brown another terrible terri-ble blow over the head and he came -back at his assailant with a thrust in the face which split his upper lip, cut off a tooth and almost several one-third one-third of Hamilton's tongue, which was left hanging by but a narrow strip of skin. . - Hamilton was staggered for a moment, mo-ment, but quickly recovered, and chased Brown to his cell, repeatedly striking him with the bar. Brown attempted at-tempted to close his cell door on Hamilton, Ham-ilton, but was unable to do so. Hen Fight Like Demons. The men fought like demons In the narrow cell, until separated, by other convicts and guards. . in tne nana-to-nana encounter in ine cell Brown slashed Hamilton's face -and head, and also received a number of heavy blows on the head from the weapon in Hamilton's hand. When they were separated and dis- armed, Hamilton was taken to the prison hospHal, where Dr. A. C. Young, prison physician, dressed his wounds. Brown was locked up in his cell, and was afterward examined. Injuries Probably Fatal. ' Hamilton has small chances for recovery, re-covery, and his condition is considered, almost necessarily fatal by Dr. Young. Brown Is also in a serious condition, and his death would not surprise the -"-officials. There is an indentation in the top of his skull where he received one of the heaviest blows: and while It has not yet been determined, it is believed that he has sustained a severe fracture of the skull, which will have to be trephined. tre-phined. Both Desperate Characters. Both the men are considered thoroughly thor-oughly desperate characters and Hamilton Ham-ilton has freouently been disciplined for breaches of the rules of the prison. He is serving a term of three years, having been sent up from this city on March 23, 1901. for an assault with Intent In-tent to commit murder. On a drunken' debauch he began to "shoot up the. town." 'and in resisting arrest attempted to kill Patrolman Jim Williams of the Salt Lake police force. He recently complained of being ill and spent several ways in the prison hospital on a milk diet. . The 'prison physician discovered that he was "shamming" and he was then returned to hard labor. Brown's Bloody Record. . Brown was convicted in Ogden of having murdered a Chinaman near that city last year. He was sentenced to serve forty years at hard labor. His sentence began January 5. 1903. v He and James Young held up a Chinese Chi-nese gardener who lived on the outskirts out-skirts ot Ogden and after falling to find the money they supposed he had secreted in his cabin, deliberately shot him.. Young escaped from Jail and disappeared disap-peared for some time but was afterward after-ward located in the Colorado penitentiary, peniten-tiary, where he is serving three years for burglary. Brown and Hamilton are considered to be the most desperate men In the prison at this time. Investigation Started. Acting Warden Wright has begun an investigation to determine the origin of the quarrel which resulted so seriously. seri-ously. He has not yet learned how or where Brown secured the knife " with which he stabbed Hamilton. Neither man will say a word as to the origin of the quarrel, and nothing can be learned from either of them that will tend to throw any new light on the matter. |
