Show WRECK VICTIMS BURNED At Least Six Lives Lost In a "Side-Swipe" Collision on the Eric Railroad; ' JAMESTOWN, N. Y., April 20. A coupling broke on a westbound freight train on the Erie road at Redhouse at 4 o'clock this morning. Just as the train was leaving the main track to take a siding for the eastbounci New York and Chicago limited express to pass. The delay occasioned by the mishap was the cause of a fatal accident of a most distressing dis-tressing nature. Almost Immediately after the freight train broke in two the passenger train came along at the rate of fifty miles an hour. The passenger engine, a combination combi-nation baggage and passenger car, a day coach and two sleepers left the track, running nearly 100 feet beside the rails, crashing into a small school-house, school-house, which was completely demolished. demol-ished. The wreck caught fire ' Immediately and all of the cars which left the track were quickly burned up. Baggageman Hotchklss was killed, his body being recovered. Tive Charred Bodies Taken Out' After fhe fire five bodies were Immediately Imme-diately taker? from the -burned cars. Three of them are those of two women and a child, who are said to have boarded the train at Youngstown. O., bound for Olean. They were burned so badly as to make it almost impossible impossi-ble to identify them. The other two have not been identified. It is believed that other bodies are still in the wreckage. wreck-age. Six more or less seriously Injured passengers and members of the crew were taken to the Salamanca hospital. Two private cars on the passenger train did not leave the track. Among the Injured is E. C. Gabler, Wells-Fargo messenger of Marlon. O., who had a leg cut off and is believed to be fatally injured. |
