Show Tommy Tracey Ko natch for Colored Fighter it Portland. - - PORTLAND, May 14.-At 'the Pastime , club last night Joe Gans, Colored lightweight light-weight of Baltimore, and Tom Tracey of Portland met in a contest which was scheduled to go twenty rounds. In the middle of the ninth round Tracey's seconds sec-onds threw up the sponge and Gans was declared the winner. Tracey was no matoh for the colored lad and after the fourth round there was ' never a doubt about the result of the fight. Gans weighed iSJ pound, while Tracey Just reached the 140 mark. The colored man wa trained to perfection, but Tracey's Tra-cey's face looked drawn and he appeared overtrained. Tracey started In to flrht fast after the second round, and landed turd on Oana's ribs, but the colored man was strong- and was not at all distressed. Gans fought a very conservative fight and st every state of the content was apparently ap-parently full of confidence. His defense was strong and he allowed Tracey to do the leading-. In the eighth round Tracey's Irs began to weaken and It was then that Gans started in to end the fight. He continually Jabbed Tracey in the Jaw with his left and followed it up with his right. Gans rained blow after blow on his opponent's jaw, knowing htm down with a terrific righthander. right-hander. Tracey took the count and the gong saved him from a knockout. When Tracey came up for the ntnjh he was all but out. and after several clinches a right-hand hook on the Jaw floored him. Tracey's seconds Jumped Into the ring and threw up the sponge. Eddie Graney, the referee, after the fight said; "It was simply a case where one man outclassed the other." George Memslo of Chicago and Jimmy Rellly of Seattle fought a fifteen-round preliminary, which was declared 4 draw. |
