Stewart was appointedas Health Commissioner by .Mayor Thompson and the appointment was confirmed by the Council last night. Dr. Stewart sueceeds Dr, J. C. E. King, who has been Health Commissioner fok the past three years. Behind the announcement . of the Mayor's action in appointing Dr. Stewart Stew-art is an interesting story of infelicity in the Mayor's official family. Some weeks ago Dr. King made application ap-plication to the Council's Sanitary committee com-mittee for leave of absence until October Oc-tober 1st. with the object of going to the East and to Europe to study sanitation, sani-tation, that he might be better fitted for. his position as Health Commissioner. Meanwhile Dr. King called on Mayor Thompson and told him what he had done, but, according to the Mayor." said nothing "concerning sanitation Investigations,' Investi-gations,' but declared he would study skin diseases In the best institutions of Kurope, and added that he would be cone from six months to a year. Mayor Thompson is said to have suggested sug-gested that he resign, as it would seem scarcely fair to the city to have the doctor doc-tor hold the office while absent from the City for so long a time. The Mayor is" reported to have argued that the office of-fice would be of no benefit to him while absent, to which Dr. King replied that he had made arrangements with another an-other physician to take his place, and I 0 NEW CITY PHYCICIAII 1 . ouTLiirza his roucrr. "I purpose to do all that is In my , power to care for the health of the. city. I cannot tell what it is to bev done, of course, till I familiarize f myself thoroughly with the duties of the office. But this I do know: I will Insist on a more stringent en- forcement of the quarantine regu- latlons. There Is too much conta-" glous disease in Salt Lake. There la no reason for this, as the hy- -glenlc conditions of the community are good, and I cannot account for It only on the grounds of poor en- forcement of Quarantine regula- ! tions." Thompson, not seeing Dr. King again, called at the Board of Health office yesterday yes-terday and was informed that Dr. King had not been to the office since Sunday and that he had left the city. When Mayor- Thompson was con-: con-: vlnced that Dr. King had left for Europe Eu-rope without consulting him he decided to make an Immediate change in the office. It is understood that Dr. King left Monday for Minneapolis, from which city he would continue his trip across the country and to several, European countries. Dr. King's term of office expired with Mayor Thompson's first administration, a little more than a year ago. He was a hold-over, so that he has not beei removed from office. All that has been done is the appointment of his successor. suc-cessor. The office pays a salary of $1200. ... Dr. Stewart Is Popular.
