May J4.-Blds for carrying passengers, soldiers and freight to Manila from the port of San Francisco for the transport service of the United States for the year ending June 80, 1904, were opened today in the office of Maj. C. A. Pevo). general superintendent of the army transport service. There were three bids submitted, one from the Occl dental and Oriental Steamship company, one from the Pacific Mai) Steamship company com-pany and one from the Japanese line of steamers known as the Toyso Kiseq Kalsha. The bids were identical. The rate for cabin passengers, allowtna 850 pounds of baggage, $135; for enlisted soldiers, In lots of 100 and over. 130 each. The bid for freight was 84.25 a ton of 200a pounds, occupying not more than forty cubic feet. The tonnage and speed ef the vessels of the various lines are different and this will enter into the question when the choice is made. . In the case of the Japanese lines it was stipulated that the contract for carrying, the United States mails could only hold In time of peace tn Japan. When that coun. try is at war with any nation the vessels are subject te Government control and can be used as war vessels. |
