Show PEABODY IS TRYING TO MAKE A CASE DENVER. Feb. 17. Former Gov. Pea-body Pea-body today began to introduce testimony in rebuttal In his contest for the ofnee of Governor now held by Gov. Alva Adams. Nine witnesses from precinct 3. ward 16. known as "Little Russia," testified t.at they had voted the Republican tlcYet, though the ballota whose number corresponded corre-sponded with their names on the poll books in the bailot box were Democratic. Onlv three of these witnesses had written their ballots without assistance from the Judges. Two.of the three identified their ballots among those unchallenged by the experts. They boro the head Ing. "Republican." "Repub-lican." but. the numbers on them ere different from those entered in the poll books. , ,- . The books wre fn a confused state and it was shown that In several cases different dif-ferent numbers appeared against the same name in the two books. Five witnesses from precinct fi. ward VS. of this rltv were examined. The numbers on the baiiots In this precinct and in the poll books wer also evidently carelessly kept, as In every case the correct ballot was found by the witness, properly numbered num-bered according to one poll book, bat incorrectly, in-correctly, according to the others. By mutual consent, two Democratic ballots, both marked with the same number, num-ber, were put in evidence. The committee commit-tee adjourned until tomorrow afternoon. |
