Show GEN. MILES TALKS OF JEFFERSON DAVIS BOSTON. Feb. 9. In .a statement issued today concerning the recent discussion of the imprisonment of Jefferson Davis at Fortress Monroe In 1865-66, Gen. Nelson A. Miles says: "The matter has been agitated at different dif-ferent periods during the last forty years, but never before has it been discussed in the hall of Congress. As far as my official action, is concerned It was directed direct-ed by the highest authority; It received tbe approval and has never been questioned ques-tioned by my superiors or the Government. Govern-ment. I have no apology to ofTer of any bind to any psrson. "The charges that the acts of the highest high-est officials of the Government or myself were prompted for the purrcse of humiliating humili-ating Mr. Divis or the people who associated asso-ciated and sympathised with him Is as puerile as It Is utterly untrue. "It is to bs regretted that the high officials. offi-cials. President Johnson. Secretaries Stanton and Dana, Judge-Advocate-Gen-eral Holt and MaJ.-Gen. Halleck are not living n order that they might answer the vicious vituperation by which their names are now assailed. Still. I am sure that they acted In good faith and, as they believed, for the best interests of the ccuntrv upon ths lnfo:mation then In their possession and the condition of the country at that time." |
