Show RACING WITH A TRAIN. Representative Clayton tells the following fol-lowing stdry of a Georgia mountaineer who had never seen "the steam cars:" Wishing to verify the tales of wonder won-der he heard, the Georgian made his way on foot to the nearest railway station sta-tion to behold the marvel. - It appears that, arriving somewhat ahead of the time scheduled for the passing of the next train, the mountaineer tarried impatiently im-patiently near the tracks, so that the things might not steal by him unawares. un-awares. The time hanging heavily on his hands, he started down the tracks to meet the train Just us it was rounding a curve. Turning about, the Georgian ran a lout the track as if for his life. The engineer tooled the whistle and the brakes were applied. This gave the mountaineer time to reach the station ahead of the train. "You fool!" shouted some one to him, "why didn't you cut across?" "Cut across?" indignantly repeated the Georgia man. "That would have been a tine thing to do, wouldn't it? Why, if I had struck the ploughed ground the blamed thing certainly would have caught me!" |
