Show Mapleton Wins District 6 Title; Will Enter All-Church Meet . Kolob Winners Down Charleston 39-17 For Title; All-Dist. Team Selected ; Trophies Awarded Mapleton ward M Men, Kolob stake champions, walked off with the District Six M Men basketball title after winnin four games in a row in the tournament con- eluded Saturday night at the Pay- -son High School Gym. They defeated de-feated an outstanding club from Charleston 39-17 to gain the cov- eted title, the first in the Mapleton Maple-ton ward's history and the fourth title for a Kolob Stake team Mapleton will represent the Kolob Ko-lob stake and District Six in the All-Church tournament which opens op-ens Wednesday, March 6, in the Deseret Gym of Salt Lake City. The team will go into the meet with a fine record and is expected to make a good showing there. The Charleston team will probably proba-bly play the South Salt Lake District Dis-trict runner-up Bennion ward team to see which club gets in.-In in.-In their first game of the tournament, tour-nament, the Kolob winners, led by Reese Mower who played a nice game, had little trouble in disposing dispos-ing of the Eureka opponents. Coach Burton Warren's subs played play-ed most of the game and did a fine job. Mapleton won 49-27. Thursday's game 'Was another easy one for the red and white clad boys and with Juan Whiting hitting the noop, tney waiKea on with a 44-25 victory over San-ford, San-ford, Colo. Again the subs played an important role in the win. Friday Fri-day night, the Mapleton team found things a bit tough and luckily luck-ily emerged with a 31-30 win over Fourth-University of Provo. Mower Mow-er put the game on ice with a side shot which put the victors ahead one point with only seconds remaining re-maining to be played. The entire team played hard ball, but was off its usual form. The championship game between Mapleton and Charleston looked like a natural but the tight Mapleton Map-leton defense had the boys from Charleston completely baffled. Jay Nielson's outstanding performance of the year, both offensively as well as defensively, kept the win-, win-, ners safely out in front. The en tire five, Mower, Bennett, Stone, Whiting and Nielson, played outstandingly out-standingly in -their championship drive. Immediately follow i n g the games, presentations were made to the winners. Assistant Supervisor Super-visor Gene Harvey presented Mapleton Map-leton with a beautiful gold trophy, i Supervisor Lloyd Whitlock pre- sented Vineyard with a silver trophy tro-phy for sportsmanship. Don Fuller presented certificates to the All-District All-District team and to those honorably honor-ably mentioned. The five players named on the all-district club were: Juan Whiting, Mapleton; Jack Carlson of Charleston, forwards; for-wards; Wendell Hansen, American Ameri-can Fork, Fourth, Center; Jay Nielson, Mapleton and Bud Harmon, Har-mon, Provo Fourth-University, guards. Reese Mower and Reed Bennett were the other two Map-Iton Map-Iton players named for honorable mention. Elvoy Widdison, brilliant bril-liant player from Charleston and high scorer for the first three nights of play, was named the most valuable player and presented present-ed with the annual Provo Kiwanis club medal. (Leonard Stone from Mapleton held this star to one field goal in the championship battle.) The final ratings and scores for teams playing Saturday night follow: fol-low: For 1st and 2nd place: Maple-39, Maple-39, Charleston 17; 3rd and 6th: Am. Fork Fourth 33, Provo Fourth -University 28; 4th and 7th: PI. Grove Third 51, Payson Third 37; 5th and 8th: Provo Ninth 38, Meadow 28. The entire team, together with Coaches Burton Warren and Doug Bills, as well as the Gleaner Girl sponsor, Gayle Wilson, who has her expenses paid by the district to follow her winning club, will leave for Salt Lake City Tuesday for the four-day event.
