Show FIRST GREETER IN AMERICA WAS AN INDIAN Hotel men have their greeters, but few know the identity or the story of the first official greeter 1 of America. He was an Abenaki Indian, of j the Maine coast, who had his day at St. James Court long before the Pilgrims had even thought of sailing. Captured by Capt George Weymouth in his exploration cruise of 1607. the Abenaki was one of six Indians carried away to England when the voyagers returned. re-turned. A favorite at court, this particular par-ticular Abenaki is said to have been given a free run of London and acquired not only a good speaking command of the English Eng-lish language but cultured habits, a", well. But native blood ran deeply, and later, according to a mixed account of legeud an'' fact, nostalgia caused him to board a fishing schooner and make his way to Newfoundland already a British fishing sLation.
