Show dom requires that we take steps now to strenghten our position, either for necessary offensive action ac-tion or to defend the vital interests inter-ests of the people of this country PACIFIC ISLANDS NEEDED FOR FUTURE SECURITY We note that applause greeted the suggestion of Representative Wadsworth, of New York, that the United States retain post-war control of Pacific islands taken from the Japanese during the course of the present war. We think the suggestion meets with the approval of the people of the United States who are conscious con-scious of the cost of winning them and of their vital importance in protecting the interests of civilized civil-ized peoples in the Far East. With the developments of aerial warfare, it is apparent that the United States if it intends to as-sert as-sert any influence in the Far East, must have bases and facilities for its fleets, both in the air and on the sea. While we hope that there will be no subesequent war in the same theater of operations, we are convinced that one of the best ways to prevent another conflict would be to be thoroughly prepared pre-pared for it. Certainly, if in the future, another an-other war develops in the Pacific territory, the nited States will become be-come involved. If this be true, wis- |
